About
Founded in 1833, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is a worldwide organization of lay Catholics, following Christ’s call to serve the poor, the suffering, and the deprived. The Society’s stated mission is “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (known as “Vincentians”) are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to neighbors in need. Internationally, members represent all ages, every race, and all incomes, and all are gifted with awareness that the blessings of time, talent, and treasure are to be shared with neighbors in need.
The St. John the Evangelist Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) was founded in April 2007 to bring this mission to Fauquier County. The Society’s founding activity, still practiced today, is the Home Visit. Through these visits, Vincentian members establish personal relationships with our neighbors in need, not only providing material assistance such as rent, utilities, food, or clothing, but also offering friendship, understanding, and prayer.
We invite you to stop in during one of our regular meetings to learn more about our mission. Meetings are held on the first and third Sunday of the month at 9:00 am in the Knights of Columbus (KoC) Social Room. Please contact Art Fairweather to let us know if you will be sitting in with us!
How to Donate
We are grateful for the help parishioners offer through monetary donations, both directly and through the Poor Box. In addition, your contributions of food, personal hygiene items, diapers and household necessities allow us to operate a robust Food Pantry for our clients.
Financial donations can be placed in the collection basket (please make checks payable to SVdP), in the Poor Boxes located in the vestibules, or online through St. John’s Parish Giving.
Non-perishable food donations (no expired or nearly expired dates, please) and other items may be left in the collection box located outside the side entrance of the Parish Office.
To donate PERISHABLE goods such as meats, eggs, breads, or produce, please contact the Food Pantry at 540-718-2031 to coordinate a donation appointment. Even small donations (say, from a garden surplus) are greatly appreciated!
Items most needed include peanut butter, jams and jellies, pasta, cereal, canned vegetables, meats, soups, fruit, and dry goods. Diapers, personal care and housekeeping supplies are also gratefully accepted.
